Faith, at Baba Nyumbani where she grew up.
FAITH’S PATH TO EMPOWERMENT.
It’s about a 3-hour bus ride from Baba Nyumbani to Kaimosi Friends College. But Faith’s personal journey has been much longer.
Coming to Baba Nyumbani at age 10, much of Faith’s childhood was shaped by her siblings and guardians in community.
Faith is passionate about helping others and changing her society —
and that drive to take action has led her to college where she studies social work and community development.
A DAY ON CAMPUS.
FAITH LEARNS A LOT IN THE CLASSROOM…
This semester, she’s taking courses in:
- Statistics
- Law
- Advocacy and lobbying
- Project management
- Resource management
- Resource mobilization
- HIV/AIDS
…BUT SHE’S LEARNING FROM THE WORLD AROUND HER, TOO.
“Being in college is fun because you meet a lot of people with different ideas, make new friends from different backgrounds.”
FAITH’S CHANGED LIFE.
WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX?
“I read novels and watch movies and TV series online. Action and comedy films are my favorite. I also love to write.”
HOW DO YOUR PASSIONS FOR SOCIAL WORK AND WRITING COME TOGETHER?
“I’m writing a motivational book right now, and social work is like a motivational career. The writing I’m working on now is called My Changed Life.”
WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU FACE?
“If you’re not careful, you can fall into the trap of peer pressure and make bad decisions. I like to keep myself busy by reading novels and going to the library.”
IF YOU COULD DO ANYTHING WITH YOUR FUTURE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
“I would change my society — how they carry their lives. My biggest dreams are to educate them on good heath and change their mentality around it.”
KAIMOSI FRIENDS COLLEGE.
See a glimpse of Faith’s world. Though these are not photos of Faith, it’s the buildings, streets, even people she may see every day at Kaimosi Friends College.

A FAMILY TO CALL “HOME.”
Before Faith became a university student, she was a daughter, sister, and a friend to many at the Baba Nyumbani micro community. When she leaves school for breaks and holidays, this is where she returns, this is the family who welcomes her. Within the community Faith is part of Beth Mbugua’s family — see their family photo below.

PASSING THOUGHTS.
Take a moment to send a short message to Faith. As an Empower Partner, you get to enter into a relationship with Faith as she walks through her time in college and into adulthood. That’s a pretty unusual opportunity! Take advantage of the space below to share a thought, message of encouragement, or ask a question. Our field team will share your words with Faith and work with her to send a response.
